The Night
Shift
Nothing gets solved at 2am.
Here's what to do instead.
At night, the rational part of your brain clocks out — and the anxious intern runs the whole building. You're not broken at night. You're under-staffed. This tool helps you run the night shift on purpose.
Your nighttime brain isn't your enemy — it's the part of you that finally has your attention.
The anxious thoughts that spiral at night are not the truth about your life. They are an under-staffed brain pulling old files and reading them aloud without a manager to put them in context. You don't need to solve anything at 2am. You need to run the night shift on purpose — with three moves that actually work.
Close the office
Give your brain a hard signal the workday is over — no real decisions happen now. Say it: "Nothing gets solved at 2am. The office is closed. We reopen at 8."
Give the intern a task
An idle threat-detector invents threats. Hand it something boring and finite so it stops filing dramatic reports — count backwards, a slow body scan, or name 5 things you can hear. Bored intern, quiet building.
Park it till morning
For the worry that won't leave: don't wrestle it — write it in one line. Now it's captured, and your brain is off guard duty. You'll handle it at 8, when the manager's back.
Half of what keeps you awake is your brain's fear you'll forget. Write it down and release the brain from holding it.
At 2am, the worry felt like:
At 8am, it was actually:
Tonight: close the office · give the intern a task · park the real worry on paper. Your nighttime brain isn't your enemy — it's the part of you that finally has your attention. Tell her: not now. In the morning.
Keep it by your bed. Use it tonight.
